Republican State Rep. Jeanne Ives

State representative Jeanne Ives recently took concrete steps towards challenging incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. She “stopped short of announcing her candidacy,” but announced that she would start to circulate petitions to get on the ballot for the March 20, 2018 Republican primary.

Ives is leveraging Rauner’s sinking support among Republicans. The decline in support can be attributed to a number of factors. One, Rauner signed into law HB 40, which according to Prairie State Wire “forces Illinois taxpayers to fund abortions during all nine months of pregnancy.”

Rauner has also been criticized by fellow Republicans for signing a bill that protects “sanctuary cities” in Illinois.

Throughout her career, Ives has focused on tax reform, term limits, and school choice, and wants to promote transparency in government if she wins election.

On an October 30 episode of Connecting the Dots, Dan Proft and Amy Jacobson discuss Ives’ candidacy for governor. Ives told the pair that she believes Republican primary voters deserve a choice in the upcoming election. If she gathers enough petitions to get on the ballot, Republicans will have a choice indeed.
