The importance of being bored

As a parent one of the words that I hate hearing more than anything else is “I’m bored”. It comes with it the suggestion that there is nothing to do, nothing to fill the time on and nothing to play with.

As an adult I like being bored. Boredom is a saving grace, it’s a chance to reflect on who you are, what you want to be and what you need to do.

I think boredom is a skill children need to learn. When my children say I’m bored my usual response is “Good. it’s good to do nothing sometimes.”

It’s good to learn to listen to your inner voice and understand what you’re saying to yourself and process all the things on your mind.

We live in an age where more data is available to us than ever before, where we are constantly bombarded with information, entertainment and much much more.

We need those moments of boredom when we are not reading, posting to Facebook, taking photos, making videos, watching television, watching Netflix and more where we can sit back and say aha now I understand.
