Global Superstore 2015 using power bi

Steps Covered:

  1. Connecting Database with Power BI Desktop.
  2. Analyzing the tables and relations.
  3. Data Cleaning using Power Query Editor with DAX
  4. Developing an Interactive BI Dashboard / Report.

Research Question

I’d like to comprehend the following from the information provided:

  1. Sales performance from 2011 to 2014 by seeing sales growth, burn-rate per year, customer’s first transaction, and best market with the largest first order
  2. Customer growth from 2011 to 2014 by seeing annual active users vs new customers, customers with repeat orders (retention)
  3. Product overview from 2011 to 2014 by seeing the best category by order, the best category by sales, the category with the highest discount value, and the best product for the first order.

GMV: Gross Merchandise Worth is a metric that calculates the overall value of your sales over a given time period. It is a measure that is extensively used in the eCommerce business and is also known as Gross Merchandise Volume.

Data Visualization

Next, a dashboard was created using PowerBI based on research questions. I first set up a Sales Review, which will provide details about sales and products that customers like best.

Analysis and Insights

  1. Sales Overview
  • Total revenue from 2011 to 2014 was 12.6 million.
  • The maximum sales have taken place in the Asian Pacific of 28%
  • The most profitable product is the Canon ImageCLASS 2200 Advanced Copier of 25k. The total sale of this product is $61.6k and the quantity of 20
  • Cubify Cubex 3D Printer Triple Head Print is the lowest seller product of (-3.8k)
  • It shows the locations of the clients making the most purchases overall allowing the sales team to drive sales and marketing efforts in these areas to retain existing customers and attract new ones.

2. Customer Overview

  • The probability that most of the customers were repeat customers and new clients was few.
  • Based on the table of Active Users vs. New Customers vs. Retaining Customers, it can be seen that there was an opposite correlation in the variable growth of active users and new customers every year. The number of active users has increased every year as evidenced by the increase in the number of customers who make repeat orders. On the other hand, the number of new customers decreased drastically in 2011 and continued to decline in the following year.
  • In 2011, Sanjit Chand became the best customer by contributing to total revenue of $16.8k.
  • In 2012, Mike Gochenbach became the best customer by contributing to total revenue of $14.4k.
  • In 2013 and 2014, Tamara Chand is the best customer with sales of $23.2k and $37.5k

3. Product Overview

  • The office supplies category is a category that dominates in the number of orders and the value of promotion every year. But this category is the lowest in the store’s revenue value.
  • Staple Envelope was the product that customers order the most. The company had to improve warehousing operations and stock control to ensure the round-the-clock availability of this product.
  • Although included in most orders, Office Supplies was not the best product category for total sales. Technology generated the most sales and this can be attributed to the unit price of the product.

Recommendations

  • Explore marketing strategies that will help target and bring in new clients.
  • The company should utilize customer and product information for marketing strategies that will help in retaining top customers.
  • The Office Supplies category seems to be the community’s favorite activity in the company’s sales area, which is indicated by orders and the technology category being the largest total sales. Companies must optimize sales by providing more products in both technology and office supplies categories and adapt their marketing campaigns to this niche market.
