Our Guide to Brixton
A change of fortune?
Brixton is booming. The area is seeing gentrification on a grand scale — becoming one of the hottest areas to rent and buy in London. Why? Many would put it down to the influence of Brixton Village, with its host of trendy shops, stylish bars and fantastic restaurants. Five years ago, the owners of the Granville Arcade offered start-up businesses the chance of six months’ free rent. Fast forward to today, and it attracts people from all over town who are keen to sample some of the best new cooking in a buzzing location.
But Brixton is so much more than just a foodie destination. Events like Brixton Splash celebrate Brixton’s rich history, as a large percentage of its population is made up of London’s Afro-Caribbean community, who run some of the best shops, cafes and venues in the capital. It’s a big draw for music fans too, with Brixton Academy playing host to a diverse selection of bands and solo artists.
