You’re seeing the past with today’s lenses: in the 17th century America, of all Europeans only English and maybe French were considered white: Spanish, Irish, Italians, Germans, etc… weren’t. Yes, not even Germans, why? For a lot of reasons but mainly because they were poor, just like today’s Eastern Europeans are not considered fully white by Western Europeans even though their skin is usually fairer than Western Europeans’.
