Everyone thinks home improvements are costly, time consuming, and difficult to achieve on your own. In some instances, this is true — putting in counters or plumbing is something you probably shouldn’t do without an experienced helping hand. I’m here to prove that you can do home improvements on your own that won’t break the bank. Here are a few, easy things you can do that will take your home to the next level.

Install Corbels to Add Character to Your Space

Framing an entryway with corbels, or maybe installing them at the edge of an island, can really add character to a room — be it classy with a sleek design, or maybe a little more simple and rustic. Depending on where you want to install them, putting up corbels can be as easy as grabbing a couple screws, and a screwdriver. Corbels can be found at a more expensive hardware store, a flea market, or even a salvage yard.

Turn Upper Cabinets Into Open Shelving

You could achieve open shelving in two ways. You could rip out all the cabinets and put up new planks — or, simply take the doors off your existing cabinets, fill in the holes, and design the interiors with a coat of paint, wallpaper, wood, or whatever you would like. Depending on your choice of decor, this option could be quite cheap.

Make Your Small Windows Look Larger

Most can agree natural light and large windows are key to a great space, but replacing windows is expensive. Instead, look for an easy fix and make small windows look larger by hanging drapes at ceiling height that fall to the floor. All you need is a set of drapes, and a rod to hang them on.

Turning a Closet Into an Office

This DIY has a few more stipulations than the rest. Naturally, you have to have a space where you have an extra closet that won’t cause a traffic jam wherever you set up your office. If you have that, then all you need to do is install a deep shelf to serve as your desk, as well as more shallow ones to still act as storage.

Swap Out Your Doorknobs/Handles

You don’t have to have the standard hardware every other house uses. Visit some vintage stores, or even some regular hardware stores, and seek out unique doorknobs or handles for your cabinets. You really only need screws and a screwdriver to install them.
