My White Boss Talked About Race in America and This is What Happened

As an employer in tech, we typically look at the background, qualifications, attitude, and better yet passion for a position of any potential candidate. I did not realize that we should have some sort of quota sheet based on race. More specifically, based on how many black Americans I must employ to look diverse.

Tech is one of the most diverse industries, with a large portion of employees from an Asia-pac background. The problem I have with all of this is that it’s not promoting diversity, it’s only promoting being black American. It also once again put the onus on the rest of us to do more, but never on the individual or community.

The reality is that only a fraction of our applicants, of resumes sent in, are from black Americans. I am not going to go chase down applicants, just to fill some ridiculous quota or make society feel better about themselves.

What I do is give those from tough backgrounds extra points, but again, I cannot force people to apply or grab anyone of the street because they look a certain way and just give them a job.
