Challenge:

Discover pain points of the current app and propose solutions to improve user experience.

Role:

Product Designer

About OLX:

OLX is the world’s leading classifieds platform in growth markets.
OLX makes it so easy to connect people to buy, sell or exchange used goods and services such as electronics, automotive, home, household appliances, various services, and also job vacancies.

“OLX is one application that I often use to sell used items. When I use OLX I have several difficulty points.”

Research:

To initiate my research, I started a comprehensive analysis of various competitors, carefully examining their UI/UX designs, user flows, and reviews in order to pinpoint any prevailing issues in OLX.
Competitors: Ebay and Facebook Marketplace

User Reviews:

As I started pondering, I wondered if others had encountered the same challenges as I did. It was then that I stumbled upon a review on the App Store, validating that I wasn’t alone in facing this issue.

  1. Too much on homepage
  2. Difficulty interacting or communicating with the seller
  3. Functional issues

Scope:

In this instance, I will solely focus on elucidating the user experience journey during the search process leading up to the user’s final decision to make a purchase.

Buying The Product Flow:

Pain Points:

  1. The User Interface requires improvement, and it is imperative to devise a solution based on the analysis conducted.
  2. The absence of a review function on the seller’s profile diminishes the user’s confidence when it comes to making a purchase decision.
  3. The app’s performance is significantly hampered by its sluggishness and the presence of unnecessary advertisements.

Beginning with the identification of pain points, I started to design solutions that effectively address them while introducing new features aimed at enhancing the overall user experience.

Homepage:

I revamped the homepage design.

  1. Slider: Promote products or services which work with OLX.
  2. Category: Shortcuts to find the category to be searched.
  3. Recommendation (Artificial Intelligence): Display products related to user habits.

Product Listing:

Here I minimize premium ads with banners (premium). The function of premium advertising is still the same as before, each premium ad will always be at the top between other products.

And in this product listing, I added several new features such as chat and stories to sell products.

Stories:

Based on the research findings, it appears that a significant portion of OLX users have a short engagement duration. For instance, once users acquire the desired item, they tend to infrequently access the OLX application.

To enhance the user experience of the OLX application, I introduced a story feature for selling products, with the assumption that users who initially lack interest in purchasing a product may develop a desire to buy it after viewing the seller’s story.

Sellers should strive to make their merchandise captivating in their stories, maximising their appeal and engagement.

Product Details:

I have implemented numerous enhancements that can be introduced on the product details page. Additionally, I would like to emphasize the chat feature in the Appstore, addressing the challenges faced by users when trying to interact or communicate with sellers.

Reviews:

Presently, OLX lacks a seller review feature, leaving users with limited assurance when it comes to purchasing products and determining the trustworthiness of sellers.

The addition of a review feature enables users to assess the reputation and reliability of sellers, serving as a valuable reference when considering purchasing items from them.

This brief case study presents preliminary findings based on limited time, research, and data availability. However, further in-depth analysis and additional testing are necessary for further improvement.

I hope you found this case study informative and enjoyable. Your feedback is highly appreciated, so please feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn or Dribbble.

Thank you!
