Johnson, who won the U.S. Open in 2016, is a clear favorite to win at the famed winged foot golf club. World number one golfer Tide finished the season winning two of three FedEx Cup playoff tournaments and finishing second in the PGA Championship in August.
On the field are John Rahm and Justin Thomas, considered two big threats to cool Johnson, as well as 2019 champions Gary Woodland and Tiger Woods, who entered the weekend as long shots. A notable absence is Brooks Koepka. The two-time champion coronavirus withdrew from the tournament due to concerns.
The U.S. Open, originally scheduled for June 18–21, had more than a dozen PGA tournaments postponed in the spring and summer due to the Covid-19 outbreak, a list that includes the PGA Championship and Masters. The fourth major in golf, the British Open was completely canceled.
