The truth about life at a B School
If you watch a lot of Bollywood Cinema you’d have a preconceived notion about life in a B-school. Firstly movies never show you half the story and when they do, it’s all made up.

When I graduated, I too had a lot of notions about B school life, all the flashy Presentations, wearing a suit every day, taking notes on your laptop, lectures and what not. I had dreamt about loud parties and a strict schedule involving long hours of study, some sleep and some play, but it’s only when you join a B school that you realize that there’s no concept of sleep here.
The college I go to isn’t all that fancy, it’s a medium tier college in Nagpur with red bricks that now have been adopted by so many colleges that it’s almost a defining feature of a B school. There’s just so much happening in here. There’s committees, forums, clubs, events, freshers, presentations and what not. And amidst all of that, there’s sports and the everlasting hunt for sleep.
Our college emphasizes a lot on being a student driven campus, hence there are students who sit at the cooperative store till 2 AM, some working on decorating the wall in front of it with pictures and lights and some making banners for upcoming events, some conducting meetings in classes for upcoming guests, the placecom people calling HRs all day, the campus is buzzing all the time.
All my friends see my Snapchat stories and think I’m having a gala time while I’m working my ass out managing presentations, assignments, tests and other work with ‘just’ 24 hours.
Life isn’t easy here. Scoring marks is pretty hard when you have a relative grading, because there’s always that one group in a class that scores a 18 on 20 and you’re stuck at a B minus not because you didn’t study but because they studied too much. And then there’s the stress of getting placed, when you see the amount of time and money you put into this degree it’s nerve wracking to thing about not having a job in the end.
The pressure may be tremendous but the experience is worth it. You learn how to get dressed in 5 minutes for anything in life, you learn how to manage 5 tasks at a time and you could write a book on crisis management. The kind of friends you make here are those who’d last you a lifetime, networking is key to being successful in a B-school, be it the group D staff or the senior most faculty or your alumni, you never know when they’d come in handy. Maybe they’d get you a job, maybe they’ll get you out of a situation you face at your work.
So make the most out of it. Learn as much as you can, and while it’s hard to master the art of not sleeping and being attentive, try to make the most out of the 4 am chai and sutta sessions behind the canteen.
