Indigenous People Matter

As the Worship Associate on Sunday, 10/15, I noted that a second indigenous tribe was added to our Land Acknowledgement. Besides the Ho-Chunk, we now name the Potawatomi as an original inhabitant of our church’s land. Since the indigenous tribes of this area were nomadic, moving to find game, other tribes passed through this area, Illinois, Kickapoo, Fox, and Sauk.

Reflecting on Rev. Matthew’s sermon on Sunday, 10/15, I viewed a few youtube.com videos. Here are a few I found helpful:

“Indigenous Peoples’ Day for Kids” is a 4:17 minutes video answering questions an elementary student might ask. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgpCOJzHo-4

“A Brief But Spectacular take on Indigenous cultures and struggles,” a PBS news story, is presented by Albert Bender, a Cherokee lawyer. This video is 2:27 minutes long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjyySqQoVCY

“Indigenous In Plain Sight” is a TEDx video presented by Gregg Deal, a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiut Tribe. This video is 13:21 minutes long.

I invite you to stretch your knowledge of our indigenous history by watching these videos.
