Literature Link 2/18: Howard Thurman and Inner Knowing

Sunday’s guest minister, Kelli Clemet, introduced us to Howard Thurman, an American author, philosopher, theologian, mystic, educator and civil rights leader — who was also black. He influenced Martin Luther King, Jr. with the non-violence he learned from Mahatma Gandhi during a 6-month trip to India.

One of the readings Sunday was the poem, “The Inward Sea.” To read it again in its entirety, go to:

The other reading was a poem by Adrienne Maree Brown, “A Complex Movement.” To read it again in its entirety, go to:

Rev. Kelli also referred to an hour-long movie about Howard Thurman entitled, “Backs Against the Wall,” which is still available on youtube.com:

The short book by Thurman, Jesus and the Disinherited, was the inspiration for Martin Luther King in sponsoring the Montgomery bus boycott. It’s available from Amazon.com:
