Killing Laziness

I, like many of you out there, read hundreds of articles describing the ‘best method’ to boost motivation, increase self-confidence and most importantly, kill laziness. And just like you, those articles did not help me. What follows is something so simple that anyone can follow. The best part? It does not require training or building habits or writing things down.

Killing laziness is not like in the movies where the hero defeats the monster and everything is better after that. No, it is more of a constant struggle, every single day of our lives. Every decision we make, from literally the time we get up to the time we go to sleep, depends on our laziness. Here is what happened to me a few days ago:
I woke up at 6 a.m. It was the first time waking up that time in many weeks, since I do not have a job or any classes to go to. I woke up that time to sort out my registration. It was difficult waking up, and then getting out of bed (yes, they are two different things). when I finally got out of bed it was already 6:15. I jumped out of bed quickly and followed my morning rituals.

On the inter-campus bus, I contemplated reading (Wuthering Heights, I definitely was not alert enough for that), but I was too tired (I was out of bed but not fully awake). So I focused on not falling asleep. I managed to do that, and complete everything I needed to on campus. I was walking back home when it hit me: I’m awake as ever, feeling not as bad as when I woke up. Actually, I was feeling much better. I had done my work for the day, and I had a crazy thought: Let me do something else. I went to the closest health centre and asked for a job.

Not the most inspiring story, I know. But later that day, as I thought about the day’s events, I had an epiphany. Instead of planning out every day of your lives, just do. That’s right, JUST DO. Do not overthink things. Do not worry about sleep, or tv or anything else. Just feel the moment. JUST DO. When your alarm clock rings, don’t think about everything you have to do today. Jump out of bed IMMEDIATELY, do a few squats to get the juices flowing and you’ll be set. JUST DO. Don’t overthink this. Don’t excessively plan what you’re going to do later. Know what you have to do and then DO. I guarantee that you will get a rush after, maybe even during your task. What you’re doing may not be successful; I did not get the job, but that did not stop me. I carried on DOING.

Remember, whatever you have to do today, get out of bed immediately, get your blood flowing quickly (a few squats or maybe you’re feeling brave. Maybe you want to exercise properly) and JUST FUCKING DO!
