10 things you might not miss about college life at UW-Eau Claire

By: Abby Yurish

For most of us, college was the best four years of our lives, especially for Blugolds. While most of us love to reminisce about our “glory days,” there are definitely some things about college life that you might be glad you won’t need to experience again. We’ve compiled the top 10 things you might not miss about college life at UW-Eau Claire, what do you think?

10. Student housing

Sharing one bathroom with 5 other people, dealing with challenging landlords, and keeping your heat on just high enough so your pipes don’t freeze are just a few of the things that can happen when you live off campus.

However, living with your friends in college is definitely one of the things that can make college so much fun, and an easy way to create some unforgettable memories.

9. Finding a parking spot on campus

Every Blugold knows that trying to find a parking spot on campus is like trying to eat only 1 cheese curd at the Camaraderie or 1 “spud-o-plenty” at Mogie’s: it’s almost impossible.

8. 8 a.m. Classes

An 8 a.m. Calculus class sounds like a great idea at registration (“It’s going to be so great to get all of my classes done right away in the morning!”), but functioning before sunrise was always a struggle when you were a student.

7. Pulling all-nighters in the library

Sometimes the night before a big exam, an all-nighter is the only choice you had. However, pulling an all-nighter is just one of the things that makes a college experience so memorable! Surely you remember drinking excessive amounts of coffee and ordering pizza to McIntyre Library with your classmates as you scrambled to remember Spanish vocabulary words for your exam.

6. Walking up the back stairs to your McPhee classes

As a Blugold, you will find that you get more exercise walking up the back stairs than you will in your Power Walking 101 class. We like to think of it as “character building.”

5. Finals week

After a whole semester of learning, it all boils down to one week. Finals week is a combination of pressure, sleepless nights, and fear of those two little words: cumulative final.

4. A diet complete with pizza, cereal, mac and cheese, and (of course) Ramen noodles.

Although your eating habits probably didn’t improve right after graduation, anything is better than consistently eating food that can be cooked in the microwave in less than 2 minutes.

3. Not being able to afford groceries or rent, but somehow finding extra cash for a night out on Water Street

Money was tight in college, but we somehow managed to pull together enough for that one, unforgettable night on Water Street. College students know how to get creative with finding spare change!

2. The Bridge

Bundling up will only keep you so warm when you have to walk across one of David Letterman’s “Top 10 Coldest Places in America.” Extreme winds and sub-zero temperatures are certainly not ideal for a morning commute to class, but we can’t imagine life at UW-Eau Claire without the bridge and the beautiful photo opportunities it provides.

1. The Hill

Every day is leg day at UW-Eau Claire, but the view from the top is worth it! Although you may not miss the walk to the top, we all know that the hill is one of the many things that defines the Blugold experience.

All in all, the UW-Eau Claire experience is definitely an unforgettable one! Our college memories are some of the best that we have, even if some of them remind us of strenuous leg workouts or frozen eye lashes.

We hope that if you find yourself in Eau Claire you will come visit us at the Alumni Office and say hello, or feel free to give us a shout-out on Facebook or Twitter!
