16 Reasons To Be Excited for the 2016–’17 School Year
It’s arguably the best time of year at UWM — the beginning of Fall semester. Students have moved back into the residence halls, Fall Welcome events are happening and everyone is excited about their classes. Here are 16 reasons to get excited for this school year.

1. Reunited and it feels so good!
After a summer apart, your college friends are all back together. WARNING: Lots of hugs and screaming may occur.

2. It’s a new semester
That means new classes with new things to learn. You’re one step closer to earning that degree!

3. FREE FOOD!
The two words that are music to college students’ ears. Seek and you shall find! Lots of student organizations and events have free food available to take advantage of.

4. Sports sports sports
Did you know UWM students get into all sporting events for FREE!? Better believe it. Check out all sport schedules on the MKE Panthers website.

5. Can you say “upgrade”?
The UWM Panther Arena had a facelift over the summer, as the Milwaukee Admirals made their move from the BMO Harris Bradley Center. All work will be completed in time for the men’s basketball home opener on Nov. 11.

6. We ❤ the fountain
The campus fountain had a fresh paint job this summer, and it looks great! The spot is perfect for a quick study break between classes. Enjoy it before it gets turned off for winter.

7. Dominate the athletic competition
Join an intramural sports team this fall! University Recreation has lots of sports, from basketball to volleyball and everything in between. Check out University Recreation’s website to register.

8. Trivia is back!
Get your friends together and school the intellectual competition at Gasthaus Trivia. The fall season began Sept. 15, but teams are welcome to join throughout the season. See Gasthaus Trivia’s website for a full schedule.

9. UWM is turning 60 this year
Wow, we’re old. Celebrate UWM’s 60th Anniversary with us at Homecoming 2016! There’s tons of events happening Oct. 4–8. A few highlights this year include the Homecoming concert, Harvest Fest and the food truck festival. See the full schedule on the Homecoming website.

10. Let’s go to the movies
Yes, we have our own movie theater on campus. Most movies are free to UWM students. SCORE! From old classics to new blockbusters, the Union Cinema has it all. The fall 2016 lineup has notable highlights, including “Taxi Driver,” “Poltergeist,” “Carrie” and “Don’t Breathe.” Check out the full schedule on the Union Cinema’s website.

11. Fun at the Union Rec Center
Are you a fan of billiards, bowling, table tennis or video games? The Union Rec Center is the place for you. Relax and play a game of pool before your next class or round out the day with bowling.

12. Get crafty
The Studio Arts and Crafts Centre in the Student Union is your creative outlet for all things arts and crafts! As a UWM student, membership is FREE. Do your own thing or sign up for a class or workshop.

13. On the prowl
A longstanding tradition and event at UWM has been the Panther Prowl. This year’s Prowl is Oct. 8, and all proceeds go towards student scholarships. Walk or run a 5K through our beautiful neighbor to the east, Lake Park. Register now!

14. UPASS, your personal chauffeur
With your tuition comes your free bus pass, a.k.a UPASS. Use it to get around and explore our awesome city! Many routes run in the campus vicinity with stops at the library, Union, Mitchell Hall and Sandburg Hall.

15. Dance the night away for the kids
Do you have the moves? The Panther Miracle Network Dance Marathon sure does. In its second year, the dance marathon is an event to raise money for the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Dancing for a cause? We can get behind that. This year’s event is Nov. 12. Sign up now to dance!

16. Get involved!
