During my internship, one of my coworkers told me about a site called ADPList. If you are someone who is just starting out in UX or just need advice, check it out. You can schedule to meet with mentors who volunteer their own time from across the globe from many companies for free.

As Co-founder Felix Lee says, the site aims to democratize mentorship for all.

I think this site is a great way to not only get mentored but to network as well. You can meet with mentors for a variety of expertise, levels, and countries. Each mentor has different topics listed. They can provide guidance on different topics, ranging from resume and portfolio reviews, interview prep, design, etc.

Here are pieces of advice I’ve picked up along the way from the mentors I’ve met so far:

TELL A STORY — If there is one thing all my mentors told me, it’s this. Ok, so you designed this e-commerce app, but what makes it stand out from others? Why did you design it that way? What was the process you took to reach the final product? Telling a story brings your projects to life, builds a connection with your audience, and shows your journey.

basically, aim to be nick

GIVE CREDIT — If you are showcasing a group project, either list the names of other members or just mention you worked in a team. Simple but often overlooked, show what you did and what others did.

MAKE YOUR CONTENT DIGESTIBLE — A project may seem straightforward to you if you worked on it. However, hiring managers may spend about 5 seconds looking at your portfolio. Keep your audience engaged. Do not add paragraphs and paragraphs of what you did. Add a mixture of text and graphics. This helps get your point across and not lose your audience’s attention.

hope this got your attention :)

There were many other pieces of advice that I got but again, we’re trying to make content digestible.

All of this advice may be obvious things that you may have already implemented, but never hurts to take another look.

It’s easy to miss the simple things when you’re busy changing your portfolio or preparing for interviews, just trying to land that job. UX is a competitive market and implementing these slight changes can make a tremendous difference to anyone’s portfolio.

If you made it this far,
