A question came up in a Design Huddle session I ran last week….

What are some accessible resources for designers to level up their product strategy thinking/influence?

Now there are lots of great resources out there like Femke’s cohort and if you have the time and money, definitely look into it. But if you’re like a lot of other designers, who are looking for resources that are a bit more flexible on your time and budget or you're just looking to start a little slower…. I got you.

Technically being fully “self-taught” in product strategy plus facilitating or using it in my day-to-day as a Principal Product Designer… I did some digging to find resources that I feel cover the key elements of Product Strategy but that are a bit more accessible budget/time wise 👇

Get your feet wet with Ted Goas’ article Doing Strategy as a Product Designer. He breaks down what a strategy entails and what questions you need to ask in order to understand the business and problem domain. He’s also jammed-packed his article with more resources on how to take your understanding further and what his own product strategy journey looked like.

Get really stuck in with Udemy’s Product Management — Getting Product Strategy Right course. “But it’s not for Designers!!” Exactly. It’s better to go straight to the source to get the best understanding of how Product Managers approach strategy. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’d do every aspect of it but it will ensure you know wtf you’re talking about and can contribute to each and every step.

P.S. Keep an eye out for significant discounts. I think this course was only €10 last week.

UX Strategy: Product Strategy Techniques for Devising Innovative Digital Solutions— You can never go wrong with an O’Reilly book

“Easy-to-apply framework for executing it. This hands-on guide introduces lightweight product strategy tools and techniques to help you and your team devise innovative digital solutions that people want.

Author Jaime Levy shows UX/UI designers, product managers, entrepreneurs, and aspiring strategists simple to advanced methods that can be applied right away.”

Design Strategy for Creative Professionals — TBH I’m not 100% sure on this one but just because it’s so cheap right now, I’m sharing it. Looking over the modules it could potentially be useful so have a look at it.

“In this online course, he teaches you how to build your own step-by-step methodology for solving design problems. Learn to use the Creative Strategy Framework to produce strategic threads that you can apply to execute creative concepts for your personal brand or clients. Organize the chaos and question the answers to turn insights into action!”
