I’m a hiring manager who’s been reviewing portfolios as long as I can remember. So let me cut to the chase, here are some small changes you can make to your design portfolio that can have a big impact.

Rather watch the video? You can find it here on tiktok.

Lead people to the next project

Don’t make people go back to your projects page to find your next relevant case study. Provide them a link at the end each of your case study’s that guides them to the next project.

Use gifs to bring your design to life

Even if you link to a prototype there is no guarantee someone will click through it. You can get fancy with the animations if you really want but even just recording a walkthrough of your prorotype and converting it to a gif can really set you apart.

Redesign your artefacts

A lot of the deliverables we create as UX or Product designers are incredibly useful but maybe not the most well designed things. Whether it’s due to deadlines or maybe you just weren’t a strong visual designer when you did them. Your portfolio gives you the opportunity to create intentional unity throughout your work.

Also, feel free to do this as many times as you want as you improve as a designer. Cuz no one is going to ever know otherwise.

Create meaningful case study titles

There is nothing worse that seeing 100 “fitness apps” or “website redesigns”. Stop it. Use the title and an opportunity to explain what you did, the goal, or even the impact you had. Doing this makes it far more enticing for recruiters and hiring managers to click on.

These few small changes can really make the difference whether you get to that interview step or not. So go open up that portfolio and spend the extra hour it will take

Don’t stop here. If you want to make sure your portfolio have everything a hiring manager or recruiter is looking for use this checklist 👇

Please remember to 👏 if you found this helpful, it helps others find it.

But wait, there’s more…
