I disagree. Children need to be taught early about what we used to refer to as civics. Call it what you will, most children by age 7 being are quite old enough to understand some pretty complex things that some adults never get. I guess it depends on how you view children. As possessions or as people. Too many parents do not bother to explain much of anything to their children. Which is somewhat understandable considering how most families struggle just to put food on the table and pay for housing.
What struck me is he referred to “my grandma and me.” My grandchildren have all been educated about civics and important political issues, concerns and debates. Critical thinking must be taught from a young age. One can use civics/politics or any one of a number of venues to do that.
I, for one, want to see my grandchildren become active participants socially and politically wherever THEIR analysis eventually leads them. This child wasn’t USED. He was educated about an issue. It’s not like kids don’t hear the conservative hate mongering from children raised by such parents. Why is it any different than that? At least they are getting an explanation and a context rather than just hearing a family member loudly rant their bigotry. One only has to visit a playground to see that mentality in action.
The sad thing about this is that the man who represents this child and influences the policies that will affect his life didn’t even bother to respond to him. But, then that’s the modern day republican for you.
