Hi. Thank you for reading my post. Good question. Firstly, if you like swimming or open water swimming, then that helps. I liked the varying depth of water and varying width of river. We feel so enclosed in pools so it’s freeing to be outside! The scenery was pretty and lots going on to take your mind off things….i.e. the distance!
Also, I have to break things up into manageable chunks. For example in this swim: I’ve got 4km to swim. Food station. I’ve got 6kms to swim. Food station. I’ve got 2kms to swim – easy! Ive done that length many a time. Food station. Ive got the last little bit to do of just 2km. Finish Line.
I do think a lot about the finish line. That’s my main focus. What will it feel like? How good (and tired) I’ll feel at the end. Also, I keep check on my technique every now and again.
Also, knowing your body and mind. The difference between ‘I’m feeling weak…I need to eat something to keep me going’ vs ‘I’m feeling weak mentally, focus on what you’re doing to get to the finish line’ So far I’ve never fought with ‘should I stop’ I think that’s because I’ve over ridden that negative feeling with ‘you just need food or to re-focus’
Hope that helps and see you next year!!
