This article is a perfect example of how difficult it may sometimes be to make data collection friendly to users. Especially when talking about the web where collecting data often implies slow data transfers and switching back and forth between windows. While there’s little we can do about the former, there’s certainly a way to improve on the latter, I think.

If I were to design a system like the one you describe, I’d let the users drag and drop photos between categories. This way you’d reduce the number of times they have to bring up the file upload dialog if for whatever reason they decide to reconsider the category. Alternatively you could let the users upload all the photos they have in one go first and then have them rearrange the photos into categories by drag and dropping them around the page. Everything that doesn’t end up in a category can be discarded. And you can keep the possibility to upload new photos to each category. Later on you could even add an AI to automatically preselect categories for the photos the user uploads.
