Brazil is a vast country with immense topographical variety, but let’s face it: we’re most interested in her spectacular beaches. Miles of coastline (nearly 5,000 to be exact) can only mean one thing: countless beach resorts to explore!

A tip for a Brazil beach resort “newbie” is to avoid limiting to the notion that Rio and surrounding southern areas are the ultimate destination. There are beach options up and down that sprawling Atlantic coast, each boasting something unique for explorers.

Consider what you want in a get-away: do you crave seclusion? Are you into modern conveniences? Maybe you seek rugged adventure, or better yet: you require quiet and a gorgeous view. No worries: there’s a beach resort to suit everyone!

Before studying resort profiles, take inventory of how hard you’re willing to work to get there: some locales pose access challenges, while others sit close to an urban center — and in turn to international airports. Now, get oriented: if Rio State is “zona sul,” then Bahia State is positioned just past “mid-coast.” Rio Grande do Norte is the culminating point before the land mass swings diagonally to the West and into Ceará State. With these broad points of entry in mind, consider the descriptions below of beach resorts waiting to accommodate you.

  1. In Natal, the capital city of Rio Grande do Norte, is the D Beach Resort. Don’t let its abbreviated name fool you: there are no shortcuts here, with ample services and amenities on site, including three pools. From your perch on Ponta Negra beach, you’ll take a relaxing sauna then sample regional cuisine. And, this resort is accessible via the São Gonçalo do Amarante Airport.

2. With 115 miles of coast, Pernambuco State proves a huge tourist destination. You’ll want to visit the sandy paradise that is Porto de Galinhas, so book at the Enotel Acqua Club. This affordable, all-inclusive resort promises unsurpassed ocean views and an accommodating staff to help orient you to dining, shopping, spa options, and the wave pool — all on site. At only 35 miles from the capital Recife, guests enjoy a city connection and proximity to Recife International Airport.

3. The Baia Branca Beach Resort is a great place to hunker down on Praia de Tamandaré, a beach known for small waves that prove ideal for kids. This boutique resort is in Pernambuco State, with lovely coastal towns nearby for exploration. Pretty much every spot on the property boasts an ocean view, including the on-site restaurant. Just a 90-minute trek from Recife International airport, this beach resort is a must.

4. Bahia State hosts some of Brazil’s finest white-sand beaches and is home to the Tivoli Ecoresort. Just north of Salvador and near Praia de Forte, this resort is serviced by Luís Eduardo Magalhães Airport. The upscale environment works a kind of “Zen” theme, and the setting practically demands guests get up close and personal with a resident sea turtle after exploring the reef, then sink into a spa experience. Enjoy one of eight (yes, eight) pools, then settle into the cozy bar for cocktails. If you need alone time, the Tivoli Ecoresort also provides 24-hour room service.

5. The Kiaroa Eco-Luxury Resort proves trickier to get to since Maraú Peninsula is more remote than most beaches in southern Bahia. However, this resort offers private aviation services, with a dedicated plane to transport guests from nearby Salvador. Take note of this resort’s higher-end attitude and be aware that prices on-site will reflect it. Still, since it’s billed as more exclusive, its visitors don’t face competition for amenities.

6. Porto Seguro Praia Resort in south Bahia State is set in a lush, tropical environment. This resort offers a refined experience with options for pool and spa time, immediate beach access, plus a fitness center. With the convenience of all-inclusive, guests enjoy effortless dining, too. While you may not want to give up that private beach cabana, perhaps an excursion? Consider visiting a museum or the nearby marker of where Brazil was discovered.

7. Casas Brancas Boutique Hotel is in Armação de Búzios in Rio de Janeiro State, just east of the Rio metropolis. It’s an ideal beach resort thanks to a) accessibility, and b) a concentration of nightlife options. So while it’s less of an “on-the-beach” nature trip and more of an access point to lots of fabulous waterfront, Casas Brancas is a superb setting for bay protection, striking views, and “walkability” to cafés and bars. Plus, guests can enjoy sophisticated dining on-site one day, and on the next find casual beach barbecue. Perfection!
