Smart Home Application

Overview

This application incorporates data-driven and actionable insights into the user experience. It enables users to complete a desired task or action with ease.

This smart home application is used to remotely control and manage various non-computing devices in a home that are inter-connected, by a smartphone or a tablet.

Problem Statement

Controlling and automating home appliances from anywhere with Internet.

Target Users

The target users are homeowners wanting to track their energy management and corporate offices to automate devices on a larger scale.

Research and Validation

I conducted a survey with various set of people and came up with the below ideas to develop an application with all features that would solve the problem.

  • Part of them wanted to use a smart home application that would automate their home appliances and help in maintaining a routine
  • The rest of them were using IoT applications already and wanted their application to be easier to use and have improved features that included energy consumption statistics, multi-user management, automated device control that would assist them to have a better lifestyle changes

Pain Points

  • User friendly experience to identify and automate daily routine
  • No efficient energy management system to keep track of the energy consumption
  • No real-time cost tracking system which would allow users to track cost for their energy consumption
  • No means to set up routines which will make users create an automated schedule for their devices, thereby enabling them to conserve energy and costs

New Pain Points identified

These are the pain points which were identified additionally when working with this application

  • No Multi-user management that allows the application to be used by multiple users with secured access. Additional Guest user management with timely access and security
  • Electricity bills can be paid in the same application where real time estimated cost can be compared with the bills

Persona

I don’t want to take away your time and make it boring😉so here is a crisp user persona with minimal goals and pain points by the users.

User Flow

Sketching and Ideation

I tested different iterations of my design with multiple set of users and optimized my design to enhance the user experience and interaction.

Final Design

On-Boarding

The 3 main features Controlling devices , Managing energy and Multi-User Management of the application has been showcased in the On-Boarding screens to bring the user interaction of the application.

SCENES

The idea of a scene is an easy way to automate everyday home routine. You can create an infinite number of scenes and schedule the devices to work accordingly. You need to create a scene and add devices and set timings for the same.

Device Control

After different iterations I came up with an experience hereby you can control devices with a simple swipe and select respective rooms all in a single window

Statistics

The energy consumption statistics can be used to manage the number of units of energy used in a day, month or year. Real-time cost tracking will provide approximate cost by usage instantaneously.

With this application you can control the energy consumption and manage your finances by comparing previous statistical data.

User Management

Multi-user management will improve the security of the devices. An individual PIN will be generated for each user and the access is restricted by the admin.

There are 3 access levels that includes admin, user and guest. Admin will be the primary owner who will provide access to maintain security.

The admin can customize access time and devices to guest users.

And That’s a Wrap !!

Thank you for your time ✌
