Local papers are dying because their content is so horrible and irrelevant and so many of them have consigned themselves to becoming more aggregators than journalists and a storehouse for local ads. And it’s not like there’s a dearth of stuff to write and talk about either - smaller towns and cities can be positively Shakespearean mother lodes of suppressed drama and intrigue.
The most interesting thing in mine is always the Letters to the Editor or some op-ed from a resident, i.e. citizen journalism. They are leaving such a huge opening that I’m considering starting up the Smalltown Curmudgeon myself.
