5 Leadership Lessons from Season 7 Game of Thrones
“The Dragon and the Wolf” Season 7 of Game of Thrones has come to an end. Despite the season finale, there’s a never-ending list of leadership lessons we can all learn from this series.
While we wait for the next season, here are some of the lessons we can contemplate from this season of the song of fire and ice:
1) The one who passes the sentence swings the sword
In a nutshell, leadership is about taking responsibility. do not be afraid to take the hard decisions. That’s what leadership is about, taking decisions that may be unpopular, or make you uncomfortable. Like firing a personable employee, who is a perennial slacker or underachiever.
2) The Rains of Castamere
Has anyone gotten over the Red Wedding? Robb Stark’s miscalculation of Walder Frey’s rage resulted in a calamity for the North, and Robb paid for it with his life and the lives of his entire army and loved ones. As a leader, it is important to commit to a cause, but leave something in reserve for unexpected turmoil.
3) A girl has no name
Arya’s journey has taught us that a great leader needs to be always growing. Tidbits of knowledge and skills acquired over time will help you in your life and your career. It doesn’t matter how old you are, ALWAYS KEEP LEARNING. Keep adding new arrows to your quiver, every year. With online courses cheaper than ever, now is the perfect time to enroll and learn a few new skills. Anything, project management, machine learning, or something more esoteric like yoga. It all helps in your current job and makes you a more desirable candidate for your next one. Never go to bed without learning something new.
4) Meereen
Another well traveled heroine of GoT, Daenerys of the House Targaryen. The First of Her Name. The Unburnt. Queen of the Andals. The Rhoynar and the First Men. Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons. Take a breath! What I learned from the Queen Dany was simple. Be open to new opportunities. Her plan was to go back to Westeros with her khalasar, but new opportunities came up. She took advantage, and is now at Westeros with a much larger and stronger force than what she had.
5) Chaos is a pit, not a ladder
Contrary to what Lord Baelish might think, chaos is not a ladder to success. It may help the conniving backstabbers, but leadership is about organizing. It’s no coincidence that the best-run organizations, from Facebook to Google to Amazon are not at all chaotic. They have clear and easy to understand management structures. This is a major reason for their consistent and continued success.
In summary, great leaders should always be focused on running their organization with a clear message and strong structure. They should always be searching for learning opportunities and acquiring skills to add to their basket of tricks. Staying open minded and seizing the right opportunities is essential for growth and sometimes taking risks is paramount to moving forward. Can’t wait for Season 8, but in the meantime, winter is coming!
