So do you consider it a truism that “we are in this together”…? True, we can’t NOT be on this planet with other human beings. But that holds true for gnats, burping cows, and every other thing that crawleth upon the earth. I maintain that hopeful narratives about humanity banding together to overcome any and all dilemmas is just an artifact that came from our writing and retelling of history. Something that we can’t help doing. But it is not necessarily true that we are in this together. We just happen to be on the same planet in an age of globalization and instant information that causes us to believe that the social experiment of civilization is a project we must all take part in.
