Agra in India does need any introduction to being the home to the Taj Mahal. In fact, Agra is among the most visited tourist destinations in India. Agra is located on the banks of River Yamuna in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and is located just 195 km from Delhi, the national capital of India. This small city of India is world known for its most famous attraction, the Taj Mahal. Founded in medieval times, it is a historical city. It has many historical attractions that are listed on the World Heritage Sites.

Climate in Agra

Agra has a continental climate with long summers from April to September. Summer temperatures can be as high as 45 degrees C. July to September are also the months of monsoon. Winters are quite pleasant but in the months of December and January, it can be too chilly all the time. Agra is also known for its thick fog in these two months. The best months to visit Agra are October, November, February to April.

Attractions in Agra

Agra has been home to many rulers who left their architectural legacy in the form of many monuments, still standing here. The Taj Mahal, the most famous monument in Agra or for that matter, in India, was constructed in 1648 by Moghul emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. Taj Mahal is her mausoleum. Made of white marble stone, this magnificent monument reflects the eternal beauty that displays different shades at different times of the day.

Another important attraction in the city is the Agra Fort. Constructed from Red Stone, Agra Fort resembles the Red Fort in Delhi. This fort was built in 1571 by Moghul emperor Akbar as an assertion of his power. Other attractions are Sikandra (Akbar’s Tomb), Itmad-Ud-Daulah’s Tomb, Mariam’s Tomb, Jama Masjid, Chini Ka Roza, Swami Bagh Mehtab Bagh and a few temples.

While in Agra, do not miss the shopping of handicrafts made there. They are exquisite pieces of fine craftsmanship. Another thing which you can relish in Agra is the traditional food offered there. Agra is famous for sweets and snacks like Dalmoth and Petha.

How to get there

Agra is very close to national capital Delhi and is accessible by road, rail and air. You can comfortably reach Agra by road by hiring a bus or taxi. It takes only about 4 hours. If you wish to travel by rail, there are as many as 20 options like daily train Taj Express or Shatabadi. Shatabadi is a superfast train and takes just 2 and ½ hours to reach there. Agra Airport at Kheria is just at 6 km from Agra and is well connected to Delhi and Jaipur.
