Vaping versus smoking, which is healthier?

The question of whether vaping is healthier than smoking is a hot topic of debate at this time. While it’s not necessarily an easy to question to answer given how new vaping is, it’s certainly an increasingly important question to answer given vaping’s rapidly rising popularity. As a result, we’ll do our best to answer this question by citing one of the world’s foremost authorities on the matter: Public Health England.

95% Less Harmful

Since vaping’s rapid rise in popularity, Public Health England, a part of the UK public healthcare system, has setout to analyse the scientific evidence in order to reach a consensus on the matter. According to the findings of their independent e-cigarette evidence review, which was carried out by independent experts working under government mandate, vaping is likely at least 95% less harmful than smoking conventional cigarettes. That is a world of difference.

Secondhand Smoke vs Vapour

As for bystanders, we all know that secondhand smoke can be fatal, but what about secondhand vapour? According to PHE’s findings, secondhand vapour is of negligible risk to bystanders. To quote the director of PHE, Professor John Newton, “vaping is a fraction of the risk of smoking, at least 95% less harmful, and of negligible risk to bystanders.”

To offer some insight here, Public Health England’s review analysed a vast amount of data, data derived from various scientific studies published in peer reviewed journals.

To this date, PHE has continued to stick by the findings of their study.

Not Everyone Knows

According to their evidence review, vaping is likely less harmful than smoking but more than half of the population in the United Kingdom does not realise it. They also found that 40 per cent of smokers in the UK have yet to give vaping a chance. Quoting Professor Newton on the matter, “over half of smokers either falsely believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking or just don’t know.”
