I totally agree with this — but it’s not easy to get people to take responsibility for another person’s experience.. far easier to define it ahead of time and just put it on someone! When people enrol in the school I run in Second Life they often have this idea that because something is VR it’s ‘not real’ so they can basically do what they like. In my mind this is like the lady you mention who has a fear of heights.

I think her reaction betrays why people are not good at looking after people when they are having a first experience of something — they are basically not good at looking after themselves! They don’t respect their own boundaries and so it is very easy to trample over them.

I try to teach people that ‘they’ are the centre of an experience — no fantastic tech or new excitement I can provide can possibly be more important than that. Knowing how integral our bodies, minds and emotions are to the experiences we have is something that needs to be respected and taught to individuals. In most circumstances this takes.. TIME.. therefore in Demo situations it should at least take quite a bit of pre-thought and training :)
