As an MS Business Analytics student at UC Davis, I have been engaged with a medical research institute as part of my practicum project. Our client is primarily focusing on precision medicine research for cancer treatments. This requires a lot of data collection, metrics calculation, and analysis. They were not able to scale their research with the current analysis process. This is where our team comes into play. We were tasked to enable our client to scale their research and reach the goal of performing gene-based analytics.

What is precision medicine

According to the National Institute of Health(NIH), it is “an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person.”

Right from the start we know that we have a fixed time frame for the project. Keeping that in mind, we defined the project scope such that it is achievable in the given time frame and also satisfy the client’s expectations. It was a challenging experience as we had to find a balance between our learning expectations and the project’s goal.
