Hawa Mahal , “Palace of Winds” was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the ruler of Jaipur and the grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. The construction of this stunning five-story palace was designed by Lal Chand Usta, an architect who was inspired by the unique concept of creating a high screen wall to allow royal women to observe street activities and processions without being seen themselves. This architectural style is a fine example of the fusion of Rajput and Mughal architectural elements.
The name “Hawa Mahal” translates to “Palace of Winds,” which is derived from its unique design featuring 953 small windows or jharokhas, intricately carved and latticed, allowing cool breeze (hawa) to flow through the palace, providing ventilation and air conditioning during the scorching summers of Rajasthan.
