BERMS OF THE ROAD

V T LONDHE 15–10–2014

1) The construction of the roads always means that one should have berms on both the sides of the road. This is generally done by having earthen berms. The main road is generally constructed either by Water Bound Macadam, Tar, Concrete.

2 )If the berms are made out of earth only ,the berms generally settle down creating difference of level to about 6 inches between the main road and the berm level and the vehicles while moving will have left side getting down while the other half will be higher. This creates imbalance in the vehicle.

3) The vehicles traveling on the two lane road crossing one another will have half of each vehicle getting down creating imbalances for both the vehicles. Now if one vehicle is overtaking the other one, it will have to get down on the right side berm creating imbalance for itself.

It is seen that the earth of the berms settles down, washed during rains creating mud. In such a case if the condition as described in para 2 and 3 is created the road condition will get dirty because the mud will have come up on the road surface along with the wheels.

For this it is suggested to create the berms out of concrete only and too with proper drainage arrangements on both the sides so that water does not collect on both the sides creating ugly atmosphere.

Now it is seen that the state is creating the berms of the different roads of cement concrete at different places.
