RIVER WATER INTAKE AT BETWA RIVER FOR JAYPRAKASH ASSOCIATES LIMITED POWER PLANT IN BINA OF SAGAR DISTRICT OF MADHYA PRADESH
V T LONDHE DECEMBER 2009–FEBRUARY 2010

When I was actually in USA, Jayprakash Associates phoned me in October 2009 and requested me to join them immediately. I replied that I would be available in India only in December 2009.
After I reached India and they having known immediately requested me to join them and I joined them in the mid of December 2009. Actually they informed that they had desired to have a Power Plant in Bina of Sagar District of Madhya Pradesh.
The requirement of water for this project could only be had from the nearest river Betwa and the best site for the construction of the river water intake structure was about 2 km away from the plant area.
I inspected the required site and immediately asked to construct the earthen bund on all the three sides of the area where the actual intake well would have been. But when the bund was not raised to the required height they started to dewater the whole area. As soon as the dewatering was continued for a sufficient time ,there appeared a lot of slippage on the upstream and downstream of the ring bund. The difficulty was then solved by loading the bund with heavy soil and the required protection works.
Further the excavation activities were started for the location of the piers as well as the main intake well. Once the required rock foundation level for the intake well as well as for the piers was reached, the actual construction activities were started and then continued till completion along with the roof. The bridge works were then taken up and after that the mechanical works were also completed with the electrical works.
