THE TITLE OF SECOND WORLD FOR WORLD FAIR TO AMERICA FOR VERTICAL FARM

V T LONDHE 03–06–2015

Pavilion is a 9,250-square-foot (860-square-meter) Vertical Farm, where 42 different varieties of vegetables, grains, and herbs are grown. The crop wall represents a highly integrated approach to agriculture and tells a story of food production for the future.

The Vertical Farm is organized on the grid system–as American farming historically has been since President Thomas Jefferson’s Land Ordinance Act of 1785–but also suggests some of the most sustainable land-use strategies such as intercropping, multi-cropping, companion planting, and contour planting. Many of these sustainable agriculture strategies take into account the importance of geography and local conditions. The wall also suggests that small farmers might achieve new efficiencies by growing more crops on a vertical plane.

THE VERTICAL FARM & COURTYARD

One of the more innovative features of the USA

The crop wall is a highly engineered system that utilizes 1,494 individual ZipGrow towers, each 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) high, filled with a growing matrix, planted with a crop, hung on a series of movable frames, and watered through a drip irrigation system. Seeds of many varieties of dark leafy greens, grains, and herbs were selected and germinated specifically for the Expo crop wall to suggest opportunities for a healthful and delicious diet. All crops will be harvested multiple times during the six-month Expo.
