Dilbert Creator, Mass Hysteria Bubble, And Trump

Everyone knows that lovable Dilbert comic strip by Scott Adams. The humour mixed with stories of your workplace really just hits the spot on some days. It’s interesting to hear the man behind the cartoon analyze current events.

Recently, in his blog post, Scott Adams, wrote about people being trapped in a MASS HYSTERIA BUBBLE. Actually, I imagine Catbert saying that as Adams speaks. The mass media to a large extent dictates what information we know and consumer about any particular subject matter.

Adams writes:

A mass hysteria happens when the public gets a wrong idea about something that has strong emotional content and it triggers cognitive dissonance that is often supported by confirmation bias. In other words, people spontaneously hallucinate a whole new (and usually crazy-sounding) reality and believe they see plenty of evidence for it. The Salem Witch Trials are the best-known example of mass hysteria. The McMartin Pre-School case and the Tulip Bulb hysteria are others.

Adams shares with us a few points about the population of the United States experiencing the Mass Hysteria Bubble. As a Canadian, just observing from the sidelines, I must say it is curious, and curious.

  1. On November 8, 2016, a MASS Cognitive Dissonance Event (MCDE) occurred whereby people’s brains began to rewrite the narrative in their minds in order to survive what they thought might be THE END.
  2. The Rediculousness of The Reasoning some members of the public resorted to essentially became Bizzaro World, The Twilight Zone, or some other completely off the wall reason for the MCDE.
  3. The Confirmation Bias is ever present where anything can be interpreted as proof positive of your beliefs regardless of whether it could be interpreted the opposite way.

And Adams goes on to list other points. It’s a lengthy read and worth at least an academic look at his points.

For me, I just try to widen my inputs from various mass media sources as I don’t doubt that each source has some bias or slant. There is none completely unbiased these days sadly.

Bottom line for me is to engage the brain. Listen to the thinkers who spend the time analyzing the issues but still chew on those same issues myself and see if I can arrive at the same conclusion. Don’t take what you see on the mainstream or alternative mass media as true simply because it is a video or in print.

Adams makes a most jarring statement at the end of his blog. It should be one to jar you too. Check it out. I’m curious to know your thoughts on it below.
