Disco Demolition Night Was Not Racist, Not Anti-Gay
Steve Dahl

Steve: the legacy of the disco demolition was something that spawned in the early to mid 80's; college radio. We weren’t going have “the guys in suits” (record company execs) spoon feed us their crap as if we were sheep. Our defiance against disco wasn’t racially motivated, it was strictly a big giant middle finger to the record company establishment. Why did NWOBHM (new wave of British Heavy Metal) happen in the same year? Why did bands like The Clash and U2 take off only several years later? Because we, the Gen X crowd opted out of the mundane AOR and pop music that ran on FM radio. Let’s face it Steve, disco was a fad for the baby boomers. They walked right out of disco and right into Miami Vice.
