Two of the most inspiring students I ever had, we shall call Teresa and Lorraine. Both were retired. Both started singing lessons in their late 60s. Both treated their lessons and practice as you might if you were going to yoga or tai chi or the gym. They did it to do it, to get fitter, to feel better.

Teresa was a lovely lady, she wanted to sing better in order to have the confidence to join a small group or choir to do music on a regular basis. She also had taken up ukulele lessons. She had not sung much before, and wanted a grounding in technique to give her a good foundation and strengthen her speaking voice as well. She was very diligent, hardly ever missing a lesson and practicing regularly.

I often say my students teach me as much as I teach them. When she first came her voice was wispy and delicate, breathy and sometimes weak. Over time, as we worked and she persevered, the voice grew stronger. There was more solid tone, and her skill in understanding how to ‘let it sing’ while still practicing good form grew. She stayed with me for nearly 10 years. And I can tell you that if you talked to her before she started, you might have heard indications in her voice that would telegraph the message that she was an older person. But after those years, her voice had the strength and quality of a much younger person. In fact…
