I’m never satisfied with names

Why?

It’s hard to like a name when you’re trying to name something. The only two times I was satisfied with naming something was when I came up with the name of my band in high school and when my friend came up with the name of the app we built. Punk Street and Respire.

What’s my obsession with names though?

When you look at popular brands like Nike, Green day and Apple — although the name may have some significant meaning (like, Nike refers to the godess of wind) it seems like the work that the company does defines the brand and the name.

If you boil it down to first principles, a name is something that is used to identify yourself with. To standout from the crowd, to set yourself apart from the millions of people/products doing similar things. You could probably just name everyone by numbers like the dwarfs in Snow White.

The best way to standout in a crowd and show off your uniqueness is by being yourself. That’s probably the easiest way to do it. Something that encompasses your weirdness that makes you, you.

Perhaps, when I choose a name, I should probably choose something that’s not only unique but hints to what I’m made up of and the things that I care about.

And without having a clear idea of that in the first place, it’s probably hard to choose a proper name.
