About Aadi Amavasai :

The Tamil month “Aadi” is the fourth month of the Tamil Calendar and it begins on July 17th, 2019.

Aadi amavasai is one of the three most powerful new moon days to offer Pitru Tarpanam (ancestral rituals) to honor your ancestors and receive their eternal blessings.

In Tamil Nadu, the Amavasya or Amavasi in Tamil month comes on the month of Aadi is also of great importance.

Importance of aadi amavasai :

The Month of Aadi is very propitious when the divine forces the blessing of earth gracefully.

In astrologically, the day of amavasai the sun and the moon in same sign. The sun signifies that your father and your soul. The moon signifies that your mother and your spirit. Aadi amavasai identifies the sun and the moon in the same sign that is cancer.

It is said that during Aadi Amavasya time, the Sun moves towards the direction of South called Dakshinayana. The start of this month is called as Dakshinayana punyakalam or the night time of Devas.

On this day, as per religious beliefs, we performing rituals like Homam, Pitru Puja or Shraddha helps in equanimity to our forefathers or ancestors.

Sometimes the Amavasya will falls on Monday, that has so special, as it is believed that a women who can fasting on this particular Amavasya, wards of widowhood and ensure bearing of progeny. This fasting is known as Somvati Amavasya Vrat.

Amavasya’s like Mauni Amavasya (in Magha month) and Mahalaya Amavasya (in Ashwayuja month) are considered as highly auspicious.

Story of Aadi Amavasai :

According to the great Hindu epic in Mahabharatam, every human soul owes their Trinity Gods like Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are the three major debts.

One of them is ‘Pitru Rin’ (the debt to ancestors)is owed to Lord Brahma and allowed to performing tharpanam by children to their ancestors.

Worship of fore fathers :

Every month, the Amavasai day is considered an auspicious for the worship of forefathers and made pujas for them.

On Amavasyas, Shraadh Puja is done to forefathers by some bhramins whose fathers have died.

It is believed that the day of aadi Amavasya, offering sesame seeds and water makes ancestors makes happy and the ancestors gives blessings to us with a prosperous life and ensure their well-being.

The deities for pitrusare Vasu, Rudra and Aditya and invoking them by chanting mantras so that food reaches the ancestors. The deities transport the food called ‘swadha’ topitrus which is accepted with great satisfaction and pride

In Tamil Nadu, lakhs of People will make special Tharpanam (Oblation) in the sea side of Rameshwaram & other Holy theeertham on Thai Amavasai, Aadi Amavasai, Mahalaya Amavasai.

Aadi Amavasai comes in the month of Jul-Aug and is the 1st Amavasai after Dakshinayanam Punya Kaalam (Southern Journey of Sun). Pitru Paksh Mahalaya Amavasai comes during Navratri.
