Are you interested in becoming a ServiceNow Developer but don’t know where to start? You’ve come to the right place! This article provides an easy-to-follow step by step guide on setting up a ServiceNow Developer Instance. It’s designed for beginners, so even if you have no prior knowledge of ServiceNow, this guide can help get you started. We’ll go over the basics of obtaining access to the platform and how to set up your instance for development.

What is ServiceNow developer?

A ServiceNow developer is a software professional who specializes in developing and customizing applications on the ServiceNow platform. ServiceNow is a cloud-based platform that provides IT service management (ITSM), IT operations management (ITOM), and IT business management (ITBM) services. ServiceNow developers are responsible for designing and implementing custom solutions for clients using the ServiceNow platform.

The ServiceNow platform is built on JavaScript and utilizes a number of other technologies such as HTML, CSS, AngularJS, and Jelly. ServiceNow developers should have a strong understanding of these technologies as well as experience with software development methodologies such as Agile and DevOps.

ServiceNow developers can work on a range of projects including developing custom applications, integrations with other software systems, and automating business processes. They may also be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to the ServiceNow platform. For More Info go through ServiceNow Developer Training Blog

What is ServiceNow Personal Developer Instance?

ServiceNow Personal Developer Instance (PDI) is a free instance of the ServiceNow platform that developers can use to build, test, and develop custom applications and integrations. PDIs are intended for non-commercial use, and are available to individual developers, ServiceNow partners, and customers.

PDIs are fully functional instances of the ServiceNow platform, including access to all features and capabilities. However, PDIs are limited in terms of resource allocation, such as the number of users, database space, and CPU usage. They are also not intended for production use or for hosting any commercial applications.

Versions of ServiceNow developer instance

The ServiceNow Personal Developer Instance (PDI) provides access to the same version of the ServiceNow platform as the ServiceNow instance. The version of ServiceNow available on the PDI is determined by when the instance was created.

As of my knowledge cutoff (September 2021), the current version of the ServiceNow platform is Quebec. ServiceNow releases new versions of its platform twice a year, with each release containing new features, enhancements, and bug fixes. Previous versions of the ServiceNow platform include Paris, Orlando, New York, Madrid, London, Kingston, Jakarta, Istanbul, Helsinki, Geneva, Fuji, Eureka, Dublin, and Calgary.

It’s worth noting that ServiceNow provides Long Term Servicing Releases (LTSR), which are versions that receive an extended period of support and maintenance, typically three years from the release date. LTSRs are designed for customers who need stability and predictability in their ServiceNow environment, and are not updated as frequently as other versions of the platform.

Upgrading a ServiceNow personal developer instance

Upgrading a ServiceNow Personal Developer Instance (PDI) is a straightforward process that involves the following steps:

  1. Check the upgrade eligibility: Before upgrading your PDI, it’s essential to check its eligibility for the latest version of ServiceNow. You can do this by logging in to your PDI and navigating to the “Upgrade Center” module. The Upgrade Center will show you if your PDI is eligible for an upgrade, based on the current version and any previously installed upgrade packages.
  2. Create a backup: Before upgrading your PDI, it’s crucial to create a backup of your instance data. You can do this by navigating to the “System Diagnostics” module and selecting the “Create Backup” option.
  3. Select the upgrade package: Once you have verified your PDI’s eligibility for an upgrade and created a backup, you can navigate to the “Upgrade Center” module and select the upgrade package that corresponds to the version you want to upgrade to
  4. Install the upgrade package: After selecting the upgrade package, you can install it by following the prompts on the screen. The installation process will take several minutes to complete, and your PDI will be unavailable during this time.
  5. Verify the upgrade: Once the upgrade package has been installed, you can verify that the upgrade was successful by checking the version number of your PDI.
