Did You Work in Highschool?

If so, what job was it? Did you work during the summer and the weekends? First jobs for many, can be a launching point; for others, just a good cocktail story.

In this article, we explore how a nonprofit idea was started back in 2015 and the vision that two former high school students in East Harlem have for the Nation.

What percentage of high school juniors and seniors do you estimate work? The data shows that one in five high school students find paying jobs*.

Now what percentage of 1st and 2nd year college students also find paying jobs? The data shows less than 30% of full time college students work.

With Nation wide data on college education showing, “40% of 1st and 2nd year college students drop out,” this certainly begs the question, what do those 40% end up doing?

Past behavior is one of the biggest predictors for future behavior; certainly though there are cases for outliers. The habits and activities that students fall back on include: former living arrangements (often with parents); hanging out at home, playing videogames; hanging out with friends; sports and late night street activities, etc etc. Since less than 30% have had jobs, do you see some problems that these young men and women place on society? If not, all good — let’s explore just why this problem is so important to address and solve.

Work for Love is a launching nonprofit started back in 2013 in East Harlem, with a mission empowered to get jobs for high school students and young professionals. With over 15+ successful testimonials, we’ve analyzed the data about where these students are now 10 years later financially and with careers and the results are shocking.

The Solution and Results

Work for Love, gets revenue flowing for young individuals immediately and teaches the basic fundamental principles of personal finance: paying rent, food, insurance, etc etc.

College and further education is a privilege and all students and families should consider. However a big problem that traditional universities posit is in the ROI. That is, it’s not seen for some time, years. With us, it’s as soon as 3 weeks.

Let’s take the case for a student named Vasen. Vasen, a former student to The Heritage School, came to the founders Jacob Black and Sam Williams with questions on how to get a job. After seeing, that Sam and Jacob were making $700 a week working a couple days after school, the question for Vasen was on the table — “how do I make this happen?”

With basic instruction and motivation, Sam and Jacob “put him on.” After 3 weeks of prepping and execution, Vasen received an offer to start work.

Vasen and his family saw the productivity and were extremely proud. Vasen did end up attending higher education and found his way back to hospitality and is now working 30 hours a week supporting his financial needs and focusing on creating his artistic passion.

This is the vision we want to execute for over 7.5 million students who struggle to find work nationwide. It begins with one solving story and helping one person at a time.
