The Smoothie Boost #2

A new recipe every week to help you improve your health, fitness and vitality

Blending a smoothie is about grabbing what ingredients are available in the kitchen. Sometimes you don’t always have in exactly what you need. That was the case for me this morning. Usually I try to blend smoothies predominantly made from vegetables rather than fruit since fruit contains more sugar. I had less of a choice of ingredients today so opted for mainly fruit based options. Still healthy but with a higher ratio of sugar than normal, something to be conscious of.

Two ingredients I always include in my smoothies and which I always try to have stock of are turmeric and cinnamon. Turmeric for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Cinnamon for its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels.

Ingredients

2 small organic carrots

2 to 3 centimetres of organic cucumber

1 satsuma

1 apple

A handful of frozen raspberries

A half thumb size of ginger

1 tablespoon of organic cocoa nibs

1 teaspoon of turmeric

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1 teaspoon of coconut oil

Water

(I blend all my smoothies with a Nutribullet. You’ll need a machine like this or the more expensive Vitamix to be able to blitz raw vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds to a smooth consistency. A regular blender won’t be able to manage the job.

Where possible I try to use organic produce, although it isn’t always available hence some ingredients are non-organic.)
