Don’t allow inspiration to kill your practice

As I was driving my car yesterday, I heard an interview with some musical teacher on the radio. The last question to him was if he wants to write texts and music for films. He answered that he is really interested and he actually writes, but only if he has inspiration for it. He said he needs something or somebody to click some buttons inside him, so that he could have his inspiration portion in order to start writing. That, he said, is the way things happen with him.

As I heard that, I thought of what the Austrian musician Franz Liszt once said:

“If I miss one day of practice, I notice it. If I miss two days of practice, the critics notice it. And if I miss three days of practice, the audience notices it.”

So here are the two kinds of people. One, who is waiting for inspiration to practice. And the other, who is practicing every day, despite of inspiration. Regardless of inspiration. Creating inspiration.

The path between an experienced musical teacher and a famous compositor is probably not that long.

The path between you and the person you want to become is not that long too.

But to go through that path, except inspiration, you need a little bit of discipline. Or a lot! Depends on how quickly you want to reach the final goal.

But in both cases — don’t allow inspiration to kill your practice!
