Working In Boston Tech: Next Step Living
There are a lot of amazing technology companies in and around Boston. Many of them are hiring like crazy!
On our BIZZpages alone there are nearly 150 Boston area tech companies actively recruiting the best talent around. These companies are awesome and we want to help them show off what it’s like to be a part of the team and the process a potential employee goes through to get there.
Today, we hear from the team at Next Step Living!
Headquartered in Boston’s Innovation District, Next Step Living is the leading provider of whole-home energy solutions in New England and makes it easy and affordable for people to live in homes with a low environmental impact. As a one-stop service provider for informed advice, funding guidance and expert work done under fixed-fee contracts, Next Step Living partners with more than 400 municipalities, civic organizations and leading corporations to deliver energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for better living.

What is it like to work at your company in terms of your culture?
Next Step Living has a vibrant energy and open culture… no cube farm here! People are friendly and happy to help new folks (and veterans) out anytime. The tech team is small but we are hiring rapidly and we’re growing into our own mini-culture within the company. We have a pretty big vision of how software will revolutionize what we are doing here at Next Step Living and it’s a great thing to be a part of. While there is a ton of work to do, the company is also super flexible and understands that life goes on outside of work too. We all work hard but it’s worth it, and we are on the path to building something extraordinary!

What’s the best way to get a job at Next Step Living?
Right here on our BIZZpage!
Our software and product teams are hiring a ton and have a bunch of roles in the pipeline… so if you are just curious about potential opportunities our tech recruiter Kristen is always happy to chat about the team we are building (connect with her Here).
What can someone expect during the interview process?
Our interview process generally starts with an overview call with our recruiter. From there your resume is passed along to the hiring manager and a short phone screen is arranged. At that point it really depends on the role… we do a fun code exercise through GitHub for some engineering roles but the final step is always an in person interview at our office in the Design Center which is in the Seaport area of Boston, where you would get to meet several members of the team and really learn what it is like to work here.
What can people expect over the course of their career at Next Step Living?
Next Step Living values hard-work above all else. If you put the time and effort into your personal development you can move up in position and responsibility quickly. There is always someone willing to help and answer your questions, including the leadership team who all sit right in the middle of it all! At the same time, at Next Step Living you really need to be a self-starter and have a strong desire to grow and learn. We have seen rapid growth and a ton of advancement; it’s a great time to come on board!
Are there any favorite activities that the employees do outside of the office?
We do a little bit of everything! Our tech team has weekly lunches together, and regularly heads down the road to Harpoon Brewery after work for beer and pretzels.
We love to get involved in the tech community and attend events like last month’s TUGG Wine & Tequila Party, and have participated in volunteer events, such as The Walk for Hunger, Charles River Clean-Ups, and Volunteering at an Organic Farm that Provides Produce to Shelters. We also have quarterly socials here at the office to bring everyone together.
Are there any fun facts or unique stories that you can share about Next Step Living or individuals that work there?
We have all kinds of fun personalities on the team…. From runners, skiiers, foodies, craft beer enthusiasts, boaters, gamers, world-travelers, flag-football players, pretty much anything you can think of!
There are also a lot of folks here who are passionate about the environment and get very involved in the community trying to drive awareness and interest around environmental concerns as well, many of us attended a huge People’s Climate March in New York, and around the office you see a lot of sustainability initiatives like our compost barrels and recycling everywhere!
