Factors that can Affect the Price of your Luxury Watch

There are many factors that can contribute to the price of your second hand luxury watch. Whether you are buying or selling, these points are useful to keep in mind. Two watches, exactly the same model, can be worth two very different amounts. Why? Let’s look at some reasons.

The Condition

One watch may be in pristine condition. The current or previous owner has serviced the watch regularly, ensured it has been kept well polished and has perhaps had some minor parts replaced to ensure the watch is running at its best. The second watch? Well, it hasn’t been serviced since the day it was purchased, has only been polished now and then and the dial is running a bit behind despite the battery having just been replaced.

You get the point, right? A luxury watch which is looked after and well maintained will obviously fetch more than one that has simply been worn like an old pair of shoes.

Engraving & History

The date and serial number on your luxury watch can have an impact on the price. Never reveal the serial number to an untrusted source as you are then leaving your watch open to counterfeiters. It’s worth getting to know the history of your timepiece. Who owned it before you? Perhaps there’s a story behind it. Maybe it’s a collectors item? Collectors will often devalue or dismiss luxury watches with personal engravings so be aware of this if your buyer is planning to add it to their collection.

What is your Watch Made of?

Watches that are plated don’t tend to claim as much as a vintage number made from pure precious metal. Make sure you get this checked out before selling your timepiece or before you commit to a purchase.

Where are the Box & Papers?

One tip we always like to give people looking to buy a brand new luxury watch is to ensure that you keep the original box and authenticity papers. Why? Well, as we are about to explain, these can ensure you get some return on your investment. By keeping all the associated documents for your luxury timepiece, its authenticity can be checked as well as any servicing or repairs. Treat a luxury watch as you would your car; maintain it well and ensure you keep all the paperwork to back it up.

The Dial & the Crystal

No, it’s not the name of a new James Bond movie… these are two very important factors that contribute to the value of your luxury watch. The dial shows off the overall appearance of the timepiece and can indicate how well it has been looked after. The crystal that protects the dial and the hands is a strong indicator of the age and condition. A scratch on the crystal isn’t a deal breaker, but a scratch on the dial can be a worry as this could affect the mechanics and the running of the luxury watch.

Keep this hints and tips in mind when both buying and selling a second hand luxury watch and you shouldn’t find yourself buying a dud or accepting a lower value.
