Better Luck This Time?
Day 1 at the COP19
Wandering the streets of Warsaw, you might think that a severely misplaced Saint Patrick’s Day celebration is taking place rather than the beginning of the UN climate change negotiations. As heads of state prepare to hash it out and decide the fate of our future on this planet, emerald green banners sporting four leaf clovers adorn the city. (What is the COP19 icon supposed to be anyways?) Maybe someone has a sense of humor. I don’t think I’m alone when I say that more than a little luck is needed if we are to curb the catastrophe of a carbon-industrial complex that is pushing us over the cliff. After 18+ years of negotiations and political paralysis, will Warsaw be any different? Let us hope so.
