Objectifying women has become the social norm.

For generations women have been degraded by men and it is nothing out of the ordinary anymore. Society has not done much to change or put an end to the discrimination against women because we continue to listen to rap music and watch music videos that degrade women. Most kids grow up listening to music that degrade women, which makes it normal for the boy to grow up with the mentality that mistreating a woman and objectifying “her” is correct. In the article “PUSSY: A Think Piece” by Joel Leon published on Medium he states that at such a young age he started listening to music that degraded women. Which made rap music that degraded women normal to him. And kids today know the lyrics of dirty rap songs than to the wheels on the bus go round-and-round. This is very sad to realize, because I know many of these songs impact children at such a young age. Children grow up thinking these rap songs are okay and what these rap songs lyrics are okay. Children, especially young boys grow up thinking it is okay to disrespect women.

What I find the most interesting is that women continue to degrade themselves as well. For example the rapper Nicki Minaj has a song named “Anaconda” in this song she talks about “I let him hit it because he slangs cocaine” Okay what woman would want to be proud of this?

Nicki Minaj is objectifying her body; calling her private parts “it” this song much like many others give the impression that women only like men for their money or will let a man with lots of money “hit it”.

Women are objectified in almost every song and music video that the new generation listens to. Women are no longer seen as a human but as an object and satisfaction to men. Why have women accepted to be objectified?

Even though many would disagree, it’s the sad truth. Women dance to these songs and sing along to the dirty messages that are in the lyrics degrading the female population. Women are okay with what they hear on the radio otherwise female rappers would not be apart of this new generation of degrading women.

Who is to blame why women are portrayed they way they have always been portrayed?

Society is to blame, the male culture has always degraded women but not only are the men to blame, women are also to blame. Female artists portray sexual images and music videos. Society makes it seem that it is okay to be seen as object and seen as a sex image. We as society, female, and male, remain to to listen and dance to the new genre of music. It is sad to say that women are a great factor to this objectification of sexualition women have to go through.

We are not only surrounded by music that degrade women, advertising is a big factor to this issue of women. In most ads that are in magazines women are half naked, if not already naked. It is sad to see that women are portrayed as an object to sell another object/item. For example this beer company uses a woman next to the beer bottle, what are they selling? The woman or the beer bottle?

This woman is nearly naked. Society will not put an end to this kind of advertising. Maybe because society has been used to this kind of advertising it has become the social norm. But why can’t men be used as women in ads? It just doesn’t seem “right” to see a man half naked advertising a beer bottle.

Why is it “normal” for the picture on left to be “normal” and the picture on the right as abnormal? We see the picture on the right as comedy because it is not socially right for a man to model besides a motorcycle in a bikini and heels. We see this as humors so why don’t we see the picture on the left as humors and socially wrong?

The degradation will continue to be a never ending cycle and will never end. It is a never ending cycle because as women are being objectified and portrayed as sex objects and pleasure for men, women continue to contribute to these cycles. Women are the models of the sexualized and the objectified ads, women are the ones singing these horrendous music, women are the ones also dancing to this music. I am not saying women are to blame because they are not, objectifying and sexualizing women has become the social norm. Objectifying women is society’s fault, because we allow it.
