Donald Trump just may be the wake up call that America needs!
We have seen the Donald’s flip-flops, his tomfoolery, and his inexplicable rise to becoming the next president of the United States of America. He has flip-flopped so much that news commentators and Americans alike are not sure which version of Donald Trump’s story to believe or which version they are comfortable with as President of the United States of America. It is now past time that America stop thinking that he is a joke and get serious about managing this menace before the joke winds up being on us.
Americans have one chance every four years to say who will be the Commander-in-Chief for the next four years. With that choice we have a responsibility to make sure we are putting an experienced leader on the world stage that will not embarrass America. We have used that choice unwisely and we now have what we have. We now know that there is nothing funny about Donald Trump, just like there is nothing funny about Vladimir Putin. Also there really isn’t anything funny about these two hooking up. In fact it scares the crap out of me and I am not alone.
I was born in Armenia a small country in the south Caucasus region of the Eurasia, a country formerly under Soviet rule. Life under Vladimir Putin and his predecessors in Russia and in former Soviet Republics has been unbearable. After World War I, Armenian leaders decided to join the Soviet Union and let Russia run the country for protection. I lived 10 years of my life in Armenia while it was under Russia’s rule and I have relatives still there. Their life is a sadder life than what Donald Trump and Putin would have you believe.
If you are working class or middle class life under leaders like Trump and Putin is hard. It is struggle just to put the food on the table. If you are a millionaire or billionaire like Donald Trump, life is great. In a society like that, everyone is suspicious of everyone. My grandfather 30 years ago was a food and beverage distributor in Yerevan, Armenia and the KGB would constantly harass him. He was forced to become a low-level KGB operative himself just to survive. People were harassed so much that they did things that they didn’t want to do.
There was no freedom of press or speech. Churches were closed down and if they were allowed to operate, the priest was forced to preach the greatness of mother Russia. Children were indoctrinated into communism as young as 5 years old. We were taken in front of Lenin statue in Yerevan, Armenia and required to recite a patriotic poem. Afterwards, red scarves were tied around our necks.
President-Elect Donald Trump is enjoying his bromance with Vladimir Putin without regard for the people who suffer under Putin’s rule. This should be as shocking to you as it is to me. The amount of power that is in the hands of these two, coupled with the ideology that seems to be leaning in favor of Putin, should be a wake up call to America and the world. I think Putin is playing Donald Trump like a violin. If we want America to remain the America we recognize, which is the counterbalance of Putin’s totalitarian ideology. We need to scrutinize Donald Trump on his policies every step of the way. Donald Trump praises this dictator and it looks like he will suppress a dissent in the same way as Putin, about whom Donald Trump said on December 17, 2015 “I think that I would probably get along with him very well.”
Donald Trump is giving every indication that he will not defend or challenge Putin against his aggression toward our NATO allies. The world economy is unstable, nationalism is growing worldwide, and Donald Trump sounds a lot like Putin.
Is America headed to looking like the Soviet Empire? History is a timeless tale that often times it repeats itself, but it doesn’t have to. All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.
