Verse Profiles: Alex Lopera
At Verse, we are building a product that we hope people will trust, and a big part of that trust is based on transparency. That is why today we are bringing you the first of many profiles of Verse creators and users in order to give you a better idea of who we are and who we want to be.
Here are 10 questions answered by Verse co-founder, Alex Lopera
1) So, first things first: what’s the first thing you do every morning?
Turn off my alarm and read my emails and text messages.
2) What’s the one thing you ALWAYS have in your refrigerator?
Hmmm…Chocolate milk, I always have chocolate milk.
3) What’s your favorite newspaper?
I really like El Confidencial, but I mostly use blogs and Twitter as my news feeds.
4) How did you meet the other Verse founders?
Borja (co-founder and CEO) went to my school. He was a year younger than me, but we had friends in common and they kept telling us that we should work together because we were both really invested in the the tech startup world. So one day we got together and started talking about the things we thought we could do. Borja then brought Dario (co-founder and CTO) along. They’d competed in math and computer science olympiads together so it all kind of made sense.
5) Why did you decide to make an app that had to do with this sector?
Well, at first we were working on this really complicated hardware, these Bitcoin ATM machines, but we realized that everyone was using them to make payments. That’s when we started noticing that the payments sector was really broken. So much of it uses legacy software and leaves out new technologies. I mean, making a payment can and should be as easy as sending a text message. It shouldn’t take ten minutes and the whole thing shouldn’t feel so bureaucratic. It should be peer to peer and it should take a second.
6) Are you happy when you go to work every morning? If yes, why?
For sure. I’m surrounded by people that are better than me in a lot of aspects and so I’m constantly learning. I’m never bored.
7) What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to deal with since you began this process?
Can I say 3 things? Fundraising is hard, because asking for money is always a delicate matter. Hiring and managing talent, as much as it’s the best part of the job, is also challenging, because finding brilliant people is not always easy and convincing them to be a part of your company is even harder. And lastly, regulation. Dealing with regulation is always complicated.
8)What are your top 3 most used apps?
Verse, of course, and then probably Whatsapp and Snapchat
9) If we had access to your Spotify, what would we currently find on heavy rotation?
I actually don’t use Spotify that much. I use Hype Machine. I just follow people that know a lot about music and they curate music for me which is awesome.
10) What’s your favorite city in the world?
I have two. I like San Francisco, because it’s the hub of all the things that I’m most interested in, but I also really love Barcelona because it’s where my friends and family are and because it’s just a great city in general.
And so there you have it, friends. In conclusion, we just want to add that Alex is an all around nice guy and an inspiration to us all.
