Can you see yourself as an interior designer?
If you have a passion for interior design and perhaps fancy taking a new career path the why not re-train as an interior designer!
There are many different aspects involved in the role of an interior designer, with a whole range of clients from individuals to companies, and a variety of projects from single rooms to an entire building.
To help get you started, we have put together some top tips on how you could begin your career…
Get a qualification –
There are lots of colleges and universities across the country offering interior design courses. If you can’t commit to full time study then why not take a part time course instead? A professional qualification will not only reassure clients of your credentials but will also provide you with valuable technical knowledge and experience in the industry.
Develop a personal style –
Building your own personal style will give you something to set you apart from other designers. It’s also important to be able to cater to client’s individual tastes and requirements whilst adding a splash of your own style and individuality.

Practice makes perfect –
Use your home as a canvas and put your skills into practice. Offer services to your friends and families to help you develop your skills, and give you a feel for what it’s like working with clients.
Create a portfolio -
Take photos to document all rooms and projects you complete. It could be an idea to create a blog or a website, so prospective clients can easily access your work.

Brush up on your maths skills –
Part of your role as an interior designer will require you to work with measurements and be able to work out areas. If your maths skills aren’t great then perhaps consider taking a refresher course?
Build your contacts –
Sourcing materials and reliable tradespeople can be a lengthy process, so work hard on maintaining your relationships with key trades. Furniture retailers such as Vertigo Interiors are a great option, as they offer products that aren’t available on the high street allowing you to create a unique look.
